Cape Keraudren

Tuesday 2nd August
While we were having breakfast we heard a thump thump thump coming from out towards the road.  You guessed it, the Lanz Bulldog again.  This time it didn’t stop but carried on south towards Port Hedland.  I expect we’ll run into it again sometime.
We packed the van and were soon heading along the dirt road to Cape Keraudren.  On the way in, we met several vans coming out.  Hopefully one of them would have left a nice spot for us.  We were in luck and were soon set up overlooking the sea.  Million dollar Real Estate, all for $13 a night!

We were chatting to the neighbours when Christel happened to look out to sea, and suddenly exclaimed, “Oh my God, Look Whales”.  Sure enough, about a kilometre off shore two or three whales were playing in the water.  We watched them for about quarter of an hour, and got some footage on the video camera.  Later we drove down to ‘our beach’, and as we rounded the corner, this time it was Cameron who spotted a pod of dolphins playing in the surf about 200 meters off shore.  What a great start to the day.
We couldn’t get on to our beach because the tide was too high, so went exploring some of the other tracks in the park while we waited for the tide to go down.  We came to a tidal inlet and decided to try a spot of fishing and swimming.
Cameron was spinning and next thing he’s yelling he’s got a fish.
Sure enough he had foul hooked a fish about 25 cm long, similar to a piper.  We unhooked the poor thing and released it again.
Then it was back to the van for lunch, and then off to ‘our beach’ for the afternoon.
Wednesday 3rd, Thursday 4th August.
Two very lazy days starting with an hour or so school work, then off to the beach to spend the day fishing, exploring, swimming, and sunbathing.  Due to the tide coming up the river, we could only get along the beach about 1½ hours either side of full tide , but as luck would have it, high tide was about 12.30, so once we were  over the river, we were marooned until the tide was well on it s way out again.

This worked out perfectly as we could fish in the river on the incoming tide, then spend the rest of the day swimming, exploring and sunbathing.  There were sand hills behind us and Cameron and I spent ages exploring them and collecting all sorts of interesting stuff amongst the debris left by the high tides.
As the tide went out we all became involved in building dams and channels from one pool to another and collecting lots of interesting shells.  We found a dead sea snake about 1½ metres long, that a hermit crab had tried to drag into its hole, and heaps of other fascinating crabs, slugs, shells and starfish.  Paradise for a 9 year old boy and not a bad place for his parents either.
Unfortunately we were going to have to move on again, and Friday morning saw us packing up and heading for Port Hedland.
